Knee Pain Relief : Knee Braces – Which One Do You Need? – Free Information Here

With so many knee braces on the market people are often times people want to find out quickly which knee brace is best for them….   We can help you weed through the billions of different braces you see online. This way you are less likely to waste your time and money.

In this article we will discuss knee braces that are useful for mild to moderate knee pain…

If you need support for your knee and know nothing about braces, you may have already gone to internet for help. That’s not a bad first step. Just be careful who you listen to, of course. Real brace specialists will be the first to remind you that you need to beware of those people who just want to sell you their brace; there are way too many of them! In the next few paragraphs you will have an idea, that may save you hundreds of dollars, if not MORE! Not only that, you may find a brace that is more supportive for you too!

Ok, let’s get down to business….

First, when you want to figure out what brace (orthosis) you need, the first person to help you, is yourself. You need to answer the following questions for yourself : Do you have a pain? Is the pain always there? How severe is your pain on a subjective scale? Try to make a reference of this pain on a scale 1 out of 10; 10 being the worst. Is it so intense that you have considered going to the doctor? Or, is the pain past considering going to the doctor and you must GO NOW!? These are very important questions you need to ask yourself. We will start with supports that are mild and work our way up to strong knee braces in subsequent blogs. Many braces you can get online, can help you, but their purposes are not always equal. Always remember this, if your pain or diagnosis is intense enough you may want to visit your physician. This is something that can not be overlooked.

Let’s get down to the basic supports first. In upcoming articles we will continue to discuss even more options for you, ACL knee braces and post operative knee braces….

1.) The neoprene knee brace. What is neoprene? Neoprene is a soft somewhat stretchy material that provides support. These neoprene knee braces are considered to be far less restrictive than others that include a hinge, or that have metal components. This can be a good thing and a bad thing to be made of all neoprene. Drytex is a similar material used, which is like neoprene in nature. The bottom line is that neoprene knee braces are more of a reminder to you that you should not do certain movements that will cause you pain. They do not really restrict movement which is what some people need due to their injury or diagnosis. These are the types of braces that a lot of basketball players used to wear, namely Michael Jordan. If all you need is a “reminder” kind of brace that will also warm up the area around your knee, then a neoprene brace could be for you.

2.) Neoprene knee braces with a hinged knee joint are next. Now you are moving up the spectrum. Why is a neoprene knee brace with hinges possibly more supportive? Basically, they can be more supportive because they have uprights that are attached to the joint that will help to restrict side to side movements at that knee that may be the culprit in causing you pain. These neoprene style knee braces are great for people that don’t have a serious injury, and who need some side to side stability. This kind of brace may provide a little extra support while participating in activities of daily living, or playing sports.

Knee Pain Relief : Patellar Subluxation – Knee Braces To Help Maintain Proper Alignment

Due to the exposed position of the knee, there are many different physical incidents that can cause you pain, few are as painful as a patellar subluxation.  Read on for information regarding this painful knee issue and how to help treat it affordably.

The trochlea is a groove on the thigh bone that is essential for knee movement.  Your knee cap goes up and down this groove as you pass through a normal range of motion.  In some cases, the kneecap does not slide properly along this groove, which can lead to problems.  In some cases, the knee leaves the groove altogether, which results in knee dislocation. In others it just slides improperly, which can cause pain or discomfort for the patient.

Patellar subluxation usually strikes adolescents or young children, however it can affect anyone. There are a number of reasons why someone may get patellar subluxation, including being born with a groove that is too shallow, a wide pelvis or abnormalities in ones gait.

A doctor will typically take X-rays of the knee to assess the damage. If the kneecap has left the groove altogether, the knee will have to be put back in place. If the knee cap remains in the trochlea, there are a number of treatment options available.

Therapy

Physical therapy is commonly used to treat patellar subluxation. Strengthening the hip abductors and hip flexors is crucial to controlling the motion of the kneecap. This is accomplished using a range of pelvic stabilization exercises, which help to strengthen the muscles and support your knee.

What are you wearing on those feet of yours?  Hmmm…..

Take a look at your footwear. Improper shoes can promote an abnormal gait. Making sure that you have decent footwear can both help control your gait, and lessen the tension on your knee.

Using A Knee Brace

Using a knee brace can help provide knee support and to lessen the pain. There are knee braces that help control the knee cap, so it does not deviate from its course along the groove in the trochlea. These knee braces can be effective in decreasing knee pain as well.

Surgery

In some cases, the above treatment options may not work in the long term, and surgery may be required. In most cases surgery is not needed, but if your knee constantly gets dislocated or you are in severe pain a lot of the time, there may be no other option.

Patellar subluxation can cause other problems with the knee to occur. For instance, osteoarthritis can be caused by patellar subluxation, which is why consulting your physician is a wise decision if you are experiencing knee pain.
